Woven Valentine Heart

A handmade gift says “I love you” in the most heartfelt way.

You can make this lovely woven heart for your Valentine by following the instructions below.

It might look a bit confusing at first (love usually does, right?), but with the provided template, it’s actually quite easy.

To make this heart even more meaningful, the yarn was hand-spun! We used a… Kromski Valentine Wool Variety Pack. This pack contains one ounce each of White Milled Rice, Fuchsia, Bright Pink, and Medium Red. The Medium Red is shown in the instructional photos and video.

The yarn was spun to a worsted/Aaron weight on the stylish Black Fantasia spinning wheel and ended up with more than enough yarn to create several hearts in each color.

This project can be done on either fabric or plastic canvas. If using fabric, you’ll need a 6–7″ embroidery hoop. For added stability, hoop two layers of fabric together.

If using fabric: Print the template on card stock. Use an awl to poke holes in the template, then transfer the design to the fabric with a pencil. Hoop the fabric layers together and poke holes through the fabric—this will make threading the yarn much easier.

If you choose to use plastic canvas, you can skip the previous steps and simply count the squares while following the diagram. The finished heart will be slightly smaller than the template because of the size of the canvas holes.
