August Mug Rug

Around here August is Back-to-School month.

What better way to celebrate than with a Mug Rug that looks like notebook paper? This makes a wonderful gift for a college-bound student, a welcome gift for a teacher, or simply a way to protect your table from an after-school snack!

This is a very simple weave, designed to give you extra practice with carrying the yarn along the sides and reading a draft.

For this pattern, you will need:

  • 92 yards of worsted weight white cotton yarn
  • About 4 yards of blue yarn
  • About 6 yards of grey yarn

We will warp to a length of 1.5 yards.

Begin by reviewing the following draft. (For visibility, the white yarn is represented by pale yellow.)

Remember how, in a previous pattern, we discussed variations in how drafts may be written? This pattern is written slightly differently than the June Mug Rug, but the concept is the same. Each block represents one strand of yarn, with the lower blocks corresponding to the holes and the upper blocks to the slots.

If you haven’t completed the June pattern or need a refresher, you can find it here:

The draft below shows that you will warp 38 strands of white yarn, followed by 2 strands of blue, and then 8 strands of white, for a total of 48 ends.

The notation above the draft reads 19×, which means there will be one strand of white in a hole and one in a slot, repeated 19 times (for a total of 38 strands).

Next, add the blue strands, followed by the remaining white strands, in the amounts indicated.
