Handspun Crochet Cowl

Our example was created using two different balls of hand-spun yarn, approximately 250 yards each. One is dyed Merino, and the other is a naturally colored Corriedale. Both were spun on the Kromski Sonata and held together to create a light bulky weight yarn.

Since hand-spun yarn is not exact, we won’t specify a crochet hook size. I used an 8 mm hook, but for your cowl, choose a hook that produces a nice, loose fabric that isn’t too flimsy.

The finished cowl measures 9″ × 36″ after wet finishing.

SET UP ROW:

Chain 34.

Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook.

Chain 3. Skip 3 chains, then single crochet in the 4th chain.

Repeat * to the end.

Chain 2 and turn.

For the rest of the cowl, repeat the following two rows until it fits comfortably around your neck. Your cowl may end up slightly wider, narrower, longer, or shorter than our example. It’s a good idea to work a few rows first and check the width. Adjust as needed by adding or removing stitches.

ROW 1:

Chain 3.

*Work 3 double crochets (dc) in the space created by the chain-3 from the previous row.

Chain 1.*

Repeat from * to * across the row.

ROW 2:

*Chain 3.

Single crochet (sc) in the space created by the chain-1 from the previous row.*

Repeat from * to * across the row.

Chain 1 and turn.

Finish with a second row, then weave in the ends.

Add buttons as shown in the photo. There are no pre-made buttonholes, so be sure to test the buttons first. They should fit comfortably through the open fabric while still being snug enough to hold the cowl in place.
